Steam Serpentine

→ ARCH 393

About
Rooted in the plant studies of the Helicopter Seed, Milkweed and Virginia Creeper, the Steam Serpentine utilizes biomimetic design principles to function as a climate responsive bathing pavilion and hikers’ outpost amidst the Icelandic landscape. Through the exploration and development of a hygroscopic mechanism, a singular module becomes a dynamic facade that can adapt depending on climate conditions and user interaction. The modules are designed to open or close in response to varying levels of humidity through the bending of their wood spines, direct ventilation through the wing structure, and create privacy through interaction by users pushing and locking the wings to close.
