About
Located in Halfway River Hot Springs, British Columbia, a hydrotherapy spa sits next to a river enclosed by interactive shelters. The structures are purely inspired by biological role models such as the hygroscopic capabilities of arborvitae cone, the scale-like pattern of its leafs, the venetian patterns of plantain lily leafs and the clustering and movement of the horsetail spores. The creation of the skin within the outdoor spa was mended by geodesic hexagonal pattern, skillfully coating the exterior of the spa and walkways. The achievement of the climate adaptive façade panels was the result of many hygroscopic and material experiments to test the functionality of varying levels of humidity and temperatures. As a result, the project includes hygroscopic panels that are activated by hot steam from the pools. The pools generate heat, but temperature and humidity can be controlled by the interactive tensile facade units that let steam escape.
