Looking for Utopia

About
Over the course of the Thesis Research and Development Term, I was beginning to explore fundamental aspects of architectural utopias and seeking to understand their place within the modern architectural landscape. It had begun with an exploration of Thomas More’s utopia, thoroughly trying to understand the inherent dialectical nature of the term of “utopia” itself to dissect and assess its viability. Quickly, I identified a major conflict that I could not ignore: the utopia, as an idea, is inherently flawed, and is very difficult to be categorised with one definition. This allowed me to explore utopias through a critical lens, deeply studying the work of the Italian Radical Architects of the 70s and the socio-political factors that instigated their work.

The research done in the TRD1 term allowed for me to cement my intellectual territory from which my thesis has since progressed. By exploring these fundamental themes of criticality, dialectics, and spatiality, it set the stage for exploring utopia visually, one of the ultimate goals of my thesis. Therefore, the preliminary visual explorations through the superimage and dialectical model were the key to begin thinking through alternative presentations to my research while uncovering further questions to investigate, as my thesis moved onto the next stage.
