Feasibility Study: Roof Optimization for PV Panels

→ ARCH 510

About
This analytic script explores the feasibility and value of applying PV panels to a new development in Toronto, ON. The building location occupies a plot of land behind a tall building that shades most of the site. As the aim is to achieve high LEED certification, the possibility of applying PV panels is explored to determine cost and energy efficiency.

Overall, the objective becomes to find the most optimal solutions to roof orientation in response to solar radiation for the implementation of PV. The input parameters of the script involve the movement of the building vertices in the Z direction, altering the orientation and angle of the roof, along with the rotation of the overall building along its central axis. The variable that defines the optimization is the change in radiation onto the roof throughout the year, introduced through Ladybug. The surrounding context was also inputted to account for shading onto the building proposal site.
