3B Design Studio
Teaching Team:
Jaliya Fonseka
This studio is an invitation to deepen our sense of identity, explore its foundational role in our creative process, and strengthen our ability to find meaning in the world through design. The studio is organized around three interrelated projects: Self, Other(s), and Community.
The first project involves a two-part self-reflection that explores who we are, what gives us a sense of belonging, and how this sense of belonging brings us closer to the natural world. The second part of the term is a group exercise, where we will design an intervention within the school of architecture to foster a sense of belonging for another or others. In the final phase of the term, we will conduct individual investigations to synthesize our findings into the design of a building or place in the City of Cambridge that offers a sense of belonging to a community or collective. A core practice of the studio will be a series of collective conversations and workshops focussing on creativity and wellbeing. The studio posits that our most creative selves emerge when we design from a place of inner knowing and belonging, recognizing that our identity is an integral part of the creative process. Together, these practices and projects aim to develop our awareness as designers and enable us to bring our authentic self to our creative pursuits.
