About
Canadian embassies lack a sense of distinct, inclusive identity appropriate for the country as we initiate a reconciliation process with Indigenous peoples. At the current embassy in Mexico City, much of the original design intent from Metis architect Etienne Gaboury has been lost or become outdated. We aim to create an embassy which fosters good relations with people, ecology, and the urban context of Mexico City, (re)connecting the “sealed” embassy to the land through the Cultural Centre. We see the existing building as a valuable gift and aim to reanimate its relevant design strategies and values. Our design process prioritized linkages between programming and land, facilitating Indigenous Canadian and Mexican cultural practices. Public spaces are designed with accessibility and generosity in mind, while equity and collective sharing guided the operational areas.
