The Crop Co-op

About
The Crop Co-op addresses the lack of affordable housing and the food security crisis in downtown Galt. It proposes relocating the future Ainslie LRT station to allow for a future line extension. This change reroutes major traffic along Wellington, merging the two fragmented triangular sites created by Ainslie’s curvature into a large site where the proposed housing project is situated. The landscape strategy leverages the site’s slope for the station access, at-grade storefronts, and underground parking.

The project aims to meet all residents’ daily needs with a community restaurant, daycare, sports center, and a convenience store with a pharmacy. It also supports Galt with social service offices, an art gallery, a bike repair shop, and retail spaces. As part of the sustainability strategy, the façade is conceived as a “perfect box” wrapped in a self-supported stacked sunroom system. This system minimizes thermal bridging, thus dramatically improving the overall envelope performance. Residential units are modular, offering flexibility with different combinations of 1BR, 2BR, 3BR, and STUDIO units, all with accessible options. Rooftop greenhouses provide produce and community engagement, with food prepared in community kitchens on each floor, the ground floor restaurant, and the soup kitchen. Composting completes the cycle, converting waste into greenhouse fertilizer.
