Quarry Greenhouse Home

→ ARCH 192

About
Located on a quarry alongside River Bluffs Park trail in Cambridge, Ontario, this residential project seeks to connect the community with each other and the rewards of gardening. The single-bedroom home is attached to a public greenhouse embedded into the quarry. The communal greenhouse is designed to grow fresh produce year-round and collaborate with the nearby Cambridge Farmer’s Market. The design is oriented according to the sun to optimize light for the greenhouse while balancing lighting and privacy in the residential quarters. The two-story greenhouse is stacked and staggered south-facing and optimizes space with vertical tiered planters adjacent to the slope of the quarry. The windows on the roof have a slight incline for rain and snow travel and can be louvred open for natural ventilation. Both the greenhouse and residential quarters feature the exposed quarry wall in the interior to gain passive thermal heating and a natural aesthetic.
